Bio Voted "Audience Favorite", Joann also received the Puccini Award in the 2011 Orpheus Competition. Joann has been a top award winner for North Dakota and North Carolina in the annual NATS Competition, placed second in the ND District of the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions--receiving the Encouragement Award in 2003, winner in the Vocal Division of the Greensboro Music Teachers Association Competition, and winner in the professional vocal division of the Coeur d'Alene Symphony Young Artist Competition. The Bel Canto Institute granted her its Orchestral Performance Award in 2009, which resulted in concert appearances with the Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra. She also appeared with the UNCG Symphony Orchestra as a soloist and winner in UNCG's Student Artist Competition. Her opera appearances include the roles of Barbarina, Norina, Yum-Yum, Violetta, Adele, Le Feu (L'enfant et les Sortilèges), Monica, Gretel, and Lola. Other opera appearances also include a condensed version of Queen of the Night, along with chorus appearances in The Merry Widow, La Boheme, La Traviata, Trial by Jury, and Die Zauberflöte. Joann has performed on the concert stage in Mahler's Symphony No. 4, Elijah, Messiah, Vivaldi Gloria, Bach's St. John Passion, and Saint-Saens Christmas Oratorio. A native North Dakotan, Joann received her B.A. in Music Performance from Minot (ND) State University where she studied under Dr. DeVera Bowles. She is currently a graduate student at the University of North Carolina Greensboro where she studies with Dr. Robert Bracey.
